Sokolov is first mentioned in writing year 1279. The original circular fort and palace in the middle was around the year 1480 completely rebuilt the Gothic castle almost square plan with corner towers . In the mid- 16th century , the castle was rebuilt in Renaissance style , which was heavily damaged by fire in 30 - year war . In 1622 , the castle Nostic family holding Sokolov until 1945. In 1663 the building was a Baroque style in 1805, rebuilt in the classical style. The museum is dedicated to the mining and related manufacturing.
